Overview
Many of the refrigerants used for heat transfer in refrigeration and air conditioning systems (A/C) are harmful to human health and/or the environment, including the climate. As a result, refrigerants are regulated under Title VI of the Clean Air Act and regulations promulgated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under 40 CFR Part 82. Many retail facilities have refrigeration or A/C equipment that are covered by EPA's regulations, which establish requirements for refrigerant handling, equipment maintenance, technician certification, and associated recordkeeping.
This fact sheet was last updated October 2018 to reflect new EPA requirements on sales, repairs and record-keeping.
